In case you haven't heard of the Crimson Daggers, they are an online study group dedicated to helping people improve and develop portfolios for the entertainment industry and they and they organize two week challenges called Bloodsports. I've decided to participate in the latest challenge which is to come up with a movie poster design for one of Hayao Miyazaki's films with a more modern and realistic style. For each entry along with the final design you have to include composition sketches and studies that are directly related to your image. I chose NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind mostly because I wanted to draw giant insects, but here's what I got so far. Also I included a few lighting studies.

Doodle Peeps and 3D!!!!

So for the past month or two I've been trying to teach myself how to use 3ds Max. I'm a complete noob when it comes to 3d modeling and texturing but so far its been a ton of fun and I wish I started sooner. I can't really take credit for any of these except the cactus because they were all done from tutorials using a lot of online sites like cg.tutsplus.com and a book that I bought called "3ds Max Modeling for Games" by Andrew Gahan. I've also been messing around a little in UDK and eventually I'd like to build a full level.
